History:
Mysterious, secretive, unreachable. Near is a little, emotionless orphan who has spent his highly unusual childhood in Wammy's House, an English orphanage full of prodigy children. The most important goal in their lives? To destroy themselves in order to become perfect copies of L, the greatest detective in the world.

Every orphan strives for the same, firece competition seizing their hearts - though they are destined to lose, all of them. Only one could be heralded victorious, the indisputable number one: Near. Although Near has always been doing his best to follow L's logic, thoughts, and justice, in the end he's still himself - his similarities with the man actually come from his own nature, something that helped him earn the title of True Successor. This also resulted in earning Mello's hatred, the kid considered "number two" in the orphanage, bound to become Near's reckless rival. This rivalty, however, is one sided.

Most people who see Near, always wearing oversized white pajamas and generally found alone, playing with toys alone like a little, pale ghost, might believe he is holding some kind of past trauma from his not so sweet childhood. Little they know that there is actually no weight carried over his shoulders, no bitter and painful memories, no dark family responsible of giving him his current shape and creating the emotionless thinking machine he is.

There is nothing in Near's past.

Not the smiling face of a gentle mother, or the protective arms of a comforting father. No brothers and no sisters to take care of him. If those utopic things have ever belonged to him, he can't recall.

It's almost as if everything had started in his old orphanage, which he can remember perfetly; how he used to write difficult equations on the ground with a small piece of chalk, how other children wanted to hurt him sometimes for no reason, calling him 'freak' at the lack of reaction they obtained from him. Near noticed that the least emotions he showed, the faster other kids grew tired of their annoying game. However, it wasn't like Near'd had any kind of natural need to display anything to begin with. He was too preoccupied with his inner thoughts, his inner world, that he had simply learned to react as little as possible to the few external stimulation that really got to him, like physical pain.

Nothing changed for him when a man named Quills Wammy took interest in him, resulting in his posterior transfer to a new orphanage. Or at least, this was what Near thought at first, until the day he met him. L.

For the first time in his life, Near felt thrilled. For the first time in his life, he found a goal that would fill his empty, meaningless existence.
